Abe Lincoln hired and fired more generals than any president in history. Finally he appointed Grant general of the armies. He refused to accept any conditions of separation and did not recognize seccession as legal. Lincoln wrote the Gettesburg Address to inspire the people of America to press on, to lift up the hearts and minds of Americans, and to state the justification of the war.
